Youth groups often start each meeting by asking someone to pray. While many people don't mind others feel put on the spot, which can make them either be overly brief or many times I find verbose and unable to come to the point. While the prayer book has great prayers why not start the year by writing a prayer for your group.
Writing Prayers
Writing prayers with a group of youth is a rewarding process. It can take some time to get over the feeling that we are some how not important or worthy enough, and then once you find a form that you are comfortable with you will want to write them for every occasion. The easiest form to follow is the collect. It is a form we borrowed from the Hebrew Prayers and it give a simple form and we Episcopalians like form. After you have written a prayer make sure you post it so that everyone can use it again as they begin your meetings.
Here is a how this form work using collect 46 for the care of children. Replace the words in italic for your own words
Who are you praying to?
Almighty God Heavenly Father
What do you what to thank God for?
You have blessed us with the joy and care of children
What do you hope for? (three or more petitions)
Give us calm strength and patient wisdom as we bring them up
that we may teach them to love what ever is just and true and good,
Who is God " in the name of the Creator, Redeemer. Sustainer"
Following the example of Jesus Christ
Amen
Amen
